BACKGROUND On February 12, 2019, the City Council awarded a contract to Great Western Installations, Inc., for the design and construction of the City of Santa Clarita's (City) first inclusive play area at Canyon Country Park. This project exemplifies the City's commitment to improving the quality of life of its residents and supports the Building and Creating Community theme of the Santa Clarita 2020 plan. This project will design and construct the City's first inclusive play area. The Canyon Country Park inclusive play area will provide elements that welcome everyone, regardless of ability or age, to play, learn, and grow together. This project will offer a balance of play experiences that promote integrated play for residents of all abilities and further develop physical, cognitive, sensory, communication, and social skills. The public outreach process included three public meetings, a presentation to the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission, and the opportunity for the public to call or email City staff with comments or questions about the project. The public meetings allowed Page 1 attendees the opportunity to learn about the project, discuss the project with City staff and the consultants, vote on play elements, express their thoughts and ideas on comment boards, and review and comment on the preliminary and revised designs. Based on the input received from the public, staff identified additional features that would enhance the project. These features included site lighting, a drinking fountain, and more shade structures which increased the cost of the project by $123,800.
