SUBJECT: MEMORIAL WALL PROPOSAL

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council review the updated memorial wall proposal and provide staff with direction.
BACKGROUND
At the July 12, 2016, City Council meeting the Council requested this item be moved for
discussion to the August 23, 2016, meeting.
On May 24, 2016, the City Council discussed the proposal for a memorial wall honoring military
veterans of the Santa Clarita Valley killed in the service of our country to be placed at the
Veterans Historical Plaza and requested staff to return to Council with an alternative design that
meets the quality and guidelines of the Council's discussion. City Council also authorized staff
to expend the necessary funds to accomplish the planning and design on such concepts so the
City Council can review and select a final design for the memorial. Staff has been in the process
of selecting a preferred design consultant.
At the June 28, 2016, City Council meeting Mr. Bill Reynolds provided the City Council with a
revised design of the memorial wall proposal. Pursuant to City Council direction, attached is the
revised memorial wall proposal for Council to review, discuss, and provide staff with direction
on the latest proposal and the new location for the proposed memorial wall at the Veteran's
Historical Plaza.
Once a memorial wall proposal is selected, a site design would be needed prior to the installation
of a memorial wall at Veterans Historical Plaza and will likely require the services of a design
consultant. Among the issues that will require design review are locating existing utilities,
electrical access for lighting, and foundation support. The design would be conducted by the
applicant, at the applicant's expense, and to the satisfaction of the City.
