CITY MANAGER APPROVAL:1
DATE: January 12, 2021
SUBJECT: NAMING OF REAL PROPERTY REQUEST 350 +/- ACRES
DEPARTMENT: Recreation and Community Services
PRESENTER: Janine Prado
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council discuss and provide direction on the naming of approximately 350 acres of real
property located adjacent to City -owned Newhall Pass Open Space.
BACKGROUND
At the December 8, 2020, City Council Meeting, the Council directed staff to place an item on
the agenda for the next City Council meeting to discuss the naming request from the Gates
Family.
The Gates family purchased 800 acres known as "Needham Ranch" in the 1950's, and eventually
led to the development of the Eternal Valley Memorial Park. As part of Development Agreement
99-002, associated with the Gates King Industrial Park (Needham Ranch) Project, approximately
350 +/- acres of real property has been transferred to the City of Santa Clarita (City) by the Gates
Family, care of (c/o) Needham Ranch Land Company (NRLC), through dedications and
donations. Most recently, the City accepted a donation of 54.9 +/- acres from NRLC at the
November 12, 2019, City Council meeting. As a result of this donation, development did not
occur on Phase 3 of the Needham Ranch development, allowing for preservation of open space
and providing trail connectivity to the adjacent City -owned Newhall Pass Open Space.
Mark T. Gates, Jr., on behalf of the Gates Family, has requested the City Council's consideration
in naming approximately 350 +/- acres, located in the Newhall Pass area as the "Gates Family
Wildlife Preserve" as shown on attached location map.
