RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council direct staff to negotiate and finalize an agreement with Greystar (GS Sand Canyon
For Rent LLC), to name a public street within the Sand Canyon Plaza Mixed Used development
after Louis Brathwaite.
BACKGROUND
At the January 11, 2022, City Council meeting, the City Council directed that an item be brought
forward to discuss options to honor and recognize the late Planning Commissioner, Louis
Brathwaite, who passed away on November 13, 2001.
Louis Brathwaite, a longtime community leader, moved to Santa Clarita Valley (SCV) in 1969
following his career in the United States Air Force. Louis was instrumental in the formation of
the City of Santa Clarita (City) and was credited for having elicited the support of Supervisor
Kenneth Hahn. Councilman Carl Boyer appointed Louis to the City Planning Commission in
1988, to which he served until 1998. Louis also served as a board member of William S. Hart
Union High School District, the SCV Boys and Girls Club, and the SCV Committee on Aging.
The current owner of the Sand Canyon Plaza Mixed Used development, Greystar (GS Sand
Canyon For Rent LLC), has expressed support for naming a future street within the development
after Louis Brathwaite in honor of his contributions to the Santa Clarita community.
