SUBJECT: TEMPORARY ON -STREET PARKING ALONG SIERRA HIGHWAY, SIO
SAN FERNANDO ROAD ON MEMORIAL DAY
RESOLUTION NO. 94-72
DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
BACKGROUND
On Monday, May 23, 1994, Deputy Mark Slater, of the Santa Clarita Sheriffs Department,
requested the City to allow temporary on -street parking on May 31, 1994 (Memorial Day)
along the west side of Sierra Highway just south of San Fernando Road, a portion of 1,500
feet. An annual veteran memorial ceremony will be held on this day at the Eternal Valley
Memorial Park. The on -street temporary parking is to accommodate the overflow of the
on -site parking during this ceremony.
After the January earthquake, the southbound direction on Sierra Highway was expanded
to three (3) travel lanes as an alternate to State Route 14, which required the elimination of
on -street parking at the subject area.
Staff reviewed the area and determined that it is feasible to allow on -street parking along
the west side of Sierra Highway south of San Fernando Road as shown on Exhibit "A".
Traffic on the street would not be significantly impacted because this temporary parking will
be on a holiday. The proposed temporary on -street parking would allow approximately 75
parking spaces at the subject area.
Staff recommends that the temporary on -street parking on Sierra Highway south of
San Fernando be allowed and to waive the necessary cost required to accomplish this project
for this time, since the on -street parking lanes have been recently removed as a result of the
earthquake.
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt Resolution No. 94-72, allowing temporary on -street parking along the west side of
Sierra Highway south of San Fernando Road, a portion of 1,500 feet, on May i 7 1994.
