CONSENT CALENDAR
DATE; September 27, 1994
SUBJECT: National Crime Prevention Month
DEPARTMENT: City Manager
BACKGROUND
The month of October is National Crime Prevention Month. The slogan for this year's campaign is 'Turn
Off The Violence." 'Turn Off the Violence" campaign has two goals: to make people aware of nonviolent
ways to deal with anger and conflict, and to help both adults and children realize that violent entertainment
creates a climate that fosters the acceptability of violence. On Turn Off the Violence Day, October 27,
1994, people are asked to turn off violent television programs, not listen to violent music, not go to violent
movies or rent violent videos, and to engage in alternative activities that are both nonviolent and
constructive. Hopefully TOV Day will help catalyze significant changes in attitudes and behavior all year
long.
During October, the Santa Clarita Valley Anti -Gang Task Force, in cooperation with the local school districts
and law enforcement, will initiate an awareness campaign on the following subjects: gun violence, T.V. and
video violence, conflict resolution, bicycle safety, and vandalism.
The Steering Committee of the Anti -Gang Task Force will implement the following: 1.) a basketball and
baseball clinic held at Master's College, 2.) a coloring contest, judging and awards will happen at the
Haunted Jailhouse, 3.) neighborhood clean-ups, 4.) grocery bag coloring contest, 5.) a billboard contest
and an 6.) advertising campaign.
