Item to be presented by: Darren Hernandez
DATE: June 26, 2012
SUBJECT: ACQUISITION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS TO ENHANCE THE
OPENING -DAY COLLECTION OF THE OLD TOWN NEWHALL
LIBRARY
DEPARTMENT: Administrative Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council and Board of Library Trustees authorize the City Manager or designee to place an
order through, and amend the contract with, Library Systems & Services, LLC (LSSI) in the
amount of $250,000 for acquisition of opening -day library materials to enhance the existing
collection of the Newhall Library.
BACKGROUND
With the upcoming completion of the Old Town Newhall Library, the Santa Clarita Public
Library will move from a 4,842 square -foot facility to a new building that will be 30,000 square
feet. The current collection of library materials (books, CD's, DVD's) at the 4,842 square -foot
library is 55,192 items. By comparison, the collection of library materials at the Canyon Country
Library is 107,378 items, and the new Old Town Newhall Library will have the capacity for a
collection of over 100,000 items. The current collection of library materials for the Newhall
Library requires enhancement in preparation for moving to the new Library which will be much
larger and will attract many more visitors. A collection enhancement of $250,000 would equate
to between 10,000 and 15,000 pieces of library material. By authorizing and placing this order at
this time, the new library materials will be selected, cataloged, processed, and available to the
public upon the opening of the new Old Town Newhall Library.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds are available in the construction budget for the Old Town Newhall Library. There is no
impact to the General Fund or the Public Library Fund.
