BACKGROUND At the November 12, 2024, City Council (Council) meeting, the Council directed staff to place an item on the agenda for the next Council meeting to discuss naming the recently acquired open space land in the northeast quadrant of the City, +/- 169 acres, to honor longtime community member John Hartigan. The late Mr. Hartigan advocated for preserving this property as open space and was a dedicated supporter of the City's conservation efforts, committed to ensuring this space would serve as a lasting legacy for the community. This land is vital to the City's ongoing efforts to establish an open greenbelt space around the valley. The acquisition of the +/-169 acres of land contribute to a critical link between the National Forest areas to the north and east. Mr. Hartigan understood the significance of connecting these national forest lands and was passionate about his land becoming part of this crucial connection. Numerous City parks, facilities, and open spaces bear the names of local community leaders who have made significant contributions to the community. For example, the Council recently approved the naming of the Dennis Koontz Trailhead and the Gates Family Wildlife Preserve after two community members who strongly supported the City's open space efforts.
