A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA
DECLARING ITS SUPPORT OF THE STUDENT
PRO DEMOCRACY PROTESTERS OF BEIJING, CHINA
WHEREAS, for seven weeks the world watched while hundreds of thousands of
students and sympathizers filled Beijing's Tiananmen Square, demanding greater
democratization and an end to nepotism and corruption; and
WHEREAS, the same world marveled at the restraint demonstrated by the
government of the Peoples Republic of China and the thousands of demonstrators for
democracy, though uneasy in the realization of the potential for open conflict and
bloodshed; and
WHEREAS, as though it was inevitable, the great, peaceful dream for democracy
erupted into a horrible nightmare of death and destruction; and
WHEREAS, the entire civilized world deplores the decision by the Chinese rulers
to resort to the use of force against peaceful demonstrators with the resulting
injury and loss of life;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City Council of the City of Santa
Clarita:
1. Desperately urges the leaders of China to return to restraint;
Z. Calls upon the President of the United States and freedom -loving
people throughout the world to condemn the use of force and violence
as an appropriate means of controlling the expression of political
ideas; and
3. Expresses its sympathy to and admiration for the student protesters
of Tiananmen Square who provided the ultimate measure of devotion to
carrying the message of freedom and individual dignity to the
oppressed people of the world and have succeeded in forging an
historic new link between China's intellectual community and its
masses.
