HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-05-25 - RESOLUTIONS - BEIJING CHINA PROTESTERS (2)RESOLUTION NO. 89-72 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA DECLARING ITS SUPPORT OF THE STUDENT PRO DEMOCRACY PROTESTERS OF BEIJING, CHINA WHEREAS, for seven weeks the world watched while hundreds of thousands of students and sympathizers filled Beijing's Tiananmen Square, demanding greater democratization and an end to nepotism and corruption; and WHEREAS, the same world marveled at the restraint demonstrated by the government of the Peoples Republic of China and the thousands of demonstrators for democracy, though uneasy in the realization of the potential for open conflict and bloodshed; and WHEREAS, as though it was inevitable, the great, peaceful dream for democracy erupted into a horrible nightmare of death and destruction; and WHEREAS, the entire civilized world deplores the decision by the Chinese rulers to resort to the use of force against peaceful demonstrators with the resulting injury and loss of life; NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the City Council of the City of Santa Clarita: 1. Desperately urges the leaders of China to return to restraint; Z. Calls upon the President of the United States and freedom -loving people throughout the world to condemn the use of force and violence as an appropriate means of controlling the expression of political ideas; and 3. Expresses its sympathy to and admiration for the student protesters of Tiananmen Square who provided the ultimate measure of devotion to carrying the message of freedom and individual dignity to the oppressed people of the world and have succeeded in forging an historic new link between China's intellectual community and its masses.
