Medina - i DATE: February 13, 1990 SUBJECT: REVISED FIRE NE MAP DEPARTMENT: Public Work ,0 BACKGROUND In September, City Council passed Ordinance No. 89-21 restricting the use of certain roofing materials in some fire zones. The Ordinance adopted is based on the existing County adopted Fire Zone Map. Enforcement of these restrictions may not be entirely effective if the fire zone designation in the existing map is not representative of the actual fire hazard that now exists. Council consequently directed staff to review and modify the Fire Zone Map as appropriated for Council consideration. The degree of fire hazard throughout the City varies with the extent and location of undeveloped hillside areas. The Los Angeles County Fire Department has established that these hillsides pose a greater threat to the spread of fire than the developed portion of the City due to the presence of brush and other natural vegetation. The Fire Department has designated those areas having the highest degree of fire hazard as Fire Zone 4 (FZ 4) and areas with a lesser hazard as Fire Zone 3 (FZ 3). The Fire Department has revised the map to reflect different levels of hazard throughout the City that have emerged as a result of new development. Some portions of the City have been re -zoned to Fire Zone 3 where the Fire Department feels that threat from hillside fires no longer exists. Other areas have been assigned to a more restrictive fire zone (FZ 4) due to adjacent hillsides that had not been identified in previous surveys. The attached map shows the layout of the existing and proposed fire zones. Use of the revised map will ensure that the City's Public Works Department enforces fire resistive construction requirements that are consistent with the Fire Department. With the updated map, future construction will incorporate materials approved for the corresponding fire zone that will provide a more realistic level of fire safety. RECOMMENDATION City Council adopt the revised Fire Zone Map.
