HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-06-26 - AGENDA REPORTS - SOLEDAD CYN RD IMPROV (2)AGENDA REPORT City Manager Approval Item to be presented by: CONSENT CALENDAR Jeff Kolin DATE: June 26, 1990 SUBJECT: Contract Award For Soledad Canyon Road Median and Street Tree Improvements DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation BACKGROUND As directed by the City Council, the Parks and Recreation Department has completed the construction documents and bidding process for median and street tree improvements along Soledad Canyon Road. These improvements include planting drought tolerant trees in the sidepanel along Soledad Canyon Road from Bouquet junction to the Bermite entrance. It also includes improving the second and third median heading east from Bouquet junction along Soledad Canyon Road. Stamped concrete and drought tolerant plant material will be used in the medians. The City advertised for bids through newspapers, The Dodge Report and contacted ten companies which had bid a similar type of project for the City six months ago. A total of six bid packages were picked up from the City. The public bid opening for this project was on June 14, 1990, at which time one bid package was submitted. The responsible bidder was Terra -Cal Construction, Inc. whose total base bid came in at $215,433.35. Reference checks have been positive and their expertise and understanding of this project's scope of work qualifies Terra -Cal Construction, Inc. for this project. This company carries all appropriate insurances and has the ability to complete this job on schedule and within budget. The completion date for the construction of this project is early to mid September of 1990. The contractor will maintain the improvement for 90 days from the date of written approval of installation. The Parks and Recreation Department will begin maintaining the improvement around January 1991. Maps displaying the proposed construction location and the landscaping theme are posted in the Council Chambers. FISCAL IMPACT The City has budgeted $300,000 for the construction of this project through capital improvement account number 25-99005227. Bid proposal of $215,433.35 from Terra -Cal Construction is within the estimated budget. Staff requests that an additional 10% of the project cost be established as a contingency fund for the project for any change orders which may be required. It is recommended that .City Council review this. report and award the contract for the Soledad Canyon Road Medians and Parkway Landscaping to Terra -Cal Construction, Inc. for $215,433.35 and establish a 10% contingency for the project in the amount of $21,543.00.
