SUBJECT: Community Services Agency Funding
Fiscal Year 1990-91
DEPARTMENT: City Manager's
Background
On December 11, 1990, City Council directed staff to review all applications
submitted for the Community Service Grant program. A selection committee was
established to recommend to council, each fiscal year, which community agencies
should receive ftuiding according to the City "priority"- human service needs
assessment. Members of the Community Service Grant Selection Committee are
Councilwoman Jo Anne Darcy, Councilwoman Jan Heidt, George Caravalho, Jeff Kolin
and Raquel Garcia.
The selection committee met on January 28, 1991, and after long deliberations,
decided which social service agencies would receive funding. Applications were
reviewed individually and served as the basis of information relative to each
organization's funding request. Human service priority areas such as, senior
services, anti-drug education for adults and youth, temporary adequate shelter,
youth crime prevention, affordable housing, mental health, child care,
delinquency.prevention, educational projects, historic preservation, job
training for the disadvantaged and youth, outdoor recreation expansion and
unanticipated need were used as a guide for recommending Community Services
agency funding levels to City Council. Other considerations for funding
included whether the organization is based in the City of Santa Clarita and has
non-profit status. Cost of service per client was another important factor
used. A full set of applications is on file in the City Clerk's Office, if you
wish to review them. In many cases, partial funding was recommended to maximize
the effect of the grant program.
The Community Service Grant Selection Committee recommends the following awards
to the community agencies in the amounts listed below:
Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue Team $3,500
Boy Scouts of America Western Los Angeles County Council $1,000
