On January 16 and 17, Councilmember Heidt, representatives of staff, and several
community members attended a workshop on gangs sponsored by the L.A..County
Sheriff's Department. The purpose of the workshop was to educate community
leaders about gangs and to begin to deal with, the gang issue as a community
problem and not simply as a police problem.
As a result of the workshop, a task force for Santa Clarita has been formed to
deal with this issue. This is a particularly opportune time to discuss this
issue while gang activity locally is in its embryonic stage. Clearly,
prevention is much easier to deal with than eradication once a community has
become inflicted with gang activity.
Councilmember Heidt would like to make a report on the task force activities at
this Council meeting.
