SUBJECT: MAGIC MOUNTAIN PARKWAY/SAN FERNANDO ROAD BRIDGE DESIGN
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
BACKGROUND
At your meeting of December 11, .1990, staff presented a number of options to
provide some aesthetic qualities to the bridge on Magic Mountain Parkway across
the south fork :of. the Santa Clara River and on San Fernando Road across
Placerita Creek. The Council directed staff to bring back specific
recommendations and cost estimates.
Since both bridges are at grade with the adjacent ground, very little of the
structure of the bridges will be seen. It was agreed with the focus for
aesthetic improvements would be on the bridge surface, i.e. the portion seen by
traveling motorists. The following are our recommendations for these
improvements.
1. Colored Stamped Concrete Median
on Magic Mountain Parkway $ 3,000
(No raised median is proposed.on
San Fernando Road
2. Decorative Railing
Magic Mountain Parkway 40000
San Fernando Road 1,000
3. Treatment of Inside Face
of Barrier
Magic Mountain Parkway 19,000
San Fernando Road 70000
4. Colored Concrete Approach Strip
Magic Mountain Parkway 21,000
San Fernando Road 20,000
5. Graffiti Retardant Material
Magic Mountain Parkway 8,000
San Fernando Road 3.000
Total 86 000

Since no street lighting is proposed as part of either the Magic Mountain
Parkway or San Fernando Road improvements, we are not recommending any
decorative lighting for the bridges.
We have discussed.each of these items with Caltrans, and they took no exception
with these proposals but did reserve the right to consider these further as part
of their plan approval process. Although we are not certain at this time, some
of this work may be eligible for federal participation.
At the meeting, we will present slides to ,further illustrate the types of
improvements we are proposing.
