SUBJECT: Resolution Opposing the Proposed General Aviation Airport in the
Baker Canyon Area
DEPARTMENT: Community Development
BACKGROUND
The Watt America Development Company has proposed a 283 acre site in the Baker
Canyon area for another General Aviation Airport in the Santa Clarita Valley.
At the June 25, 1991 meeting, the City Council for the City of Santa. Clarita
stated its' opposition to the proposal and instructed City Staff to prepare a
Resolution opposing the proposed airport.
Adopt Resolution No. 91-111 and direct -staff to transmit a copy of the
Resolution to the County Board of Supervisors.

RESOLUTION 91-111
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA CLARITA OPPOSING
A GENERAL AVIATION AIRPORT IN THE BAKER CANYON AREA
WHEREAS, the Watt America Development Company is proposing a general
aviationairport for the Santa Clarita Valley in the Baker Canyon area; and,
WHEREAS, California State Law requires cities to adopt a general plan
for the physical development of ,the City and any land outside its boundaries
which bears relation to the City; and,
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clarita has adopted a general plan which
established a planning area that includes much of the Santa Clarita-Valley;
and,

WHEREAS, the. City. General Plan recognizes the need to preserve,.
protect, and enhance the natural and human environment in the Santa Clarita
Valley; and,
WHEREAS, the Baker Canyon area is located, within the Planning Area of
the City of Santa Clarita; and,
WHEREAS, the General Plan for the City of Santa Clarita does not
support the concept of a general aviation airport in the Baker Canyon area;
and,
WHEREAS, the site of the proposed airport is adjacent to a
significant ridgeline that has been identified by the City of Santa Clarita
and contains topography which is not generally compatible with a general
aviation airport; and,
WHEREAS, the site of the proposed airport is adjacent to high tension
electrical transmission lines of the Southern California Edison Company; and,
WHEREAS, no documentation has been presented stating that no superior
alternative sites. for general aviation uses are available in the Santa Clarita
Valley; and,
WHEREAS, a general aviation airport in the Baker Canyon area would
adversely impact residents of the City of Santa Clarita, and the human and
natural environment of the Santa Clarita Valley;
NOV, THEREFORE, the City Council hereby resolves that the City
Council of the City of Santa Clarita is opposed to locating a general aviation
airport for the Santa Clarita Valley in the Baker Canyon area.
