SUBJECT: Authorization to Bid the Sierra Vista
Junior High School Lighting Project
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
BACKGROUND
Staff has completed the construction plans and specifications to install
lighting on the existing ballfield at the Sierra Vista Junior High School.
The Office of the State Architect and the School Board have reviewed and
approved the plans. The project is now ready to go to bid. The construction
drawings and bid documents are in the City Clerk's office for Council review.
The lighting project consists of installing a total of six poles', three along
each base line. The light fixtures attached to the poles are of professional
athletic field quality and will be adjusted -to provide optimal field lighting
with minimal off -field glare or light spill. Staff has involved the local
Committee for Better Lighting in the design process of this project and have
received their approval and support.
An agreement between the City of Santa Clarita and William S. Hart School
District will outline the joint use of this facility. The new lighted
ballfield will enable the City to expand its programming capabilities in
active recreational sports. Currently, the City programs games on four
lighted fields almost every night of the year. Three of the existing fields
are City parks, North Oaks Park, Santa Clarita Park, and Newhall Park with the
fourth park being Bouquet Canyon Country Park. The completion of the project
will provide an additional sports facility for City use.
The construction of this project will begin in early November of this year.
In January of 1992, the construction will be completed and the lights
operational.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds are available in account number 25-99009-227 to complete this project.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council approve the plans and specifications
and authorize staff to advertise for bids on the Sierra Vista Junior High
School ballfield lighting project.
