SUBJECT: Application Renewal for the California Healthy Cities Project
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
BACKGROUND
The Western Consortium for Public Health has initiated the California Healthy
Cities Project to contribute to the quality of life in cities and increase the
health status of California's citizens. The City of Santa Clarita has
participated in the project for the last -two years. Santa Clarita has been
recognized as a Charter City of the California Healthy Cities Project for its
participation.
Past City activities for the Healthy Cities Project included open space
preservation through the Santa Clara River Study and the City's Ridgeline
Preservation and Hillside Development Ordinance, trail easement acquisition and
development, grant application through the Clean Air and Transportation
Improvement -Act, and the National Recreation and Parks Association's Walking
Program.
The City of Santa Clarita's 1992-93 Healthy Cities Project includes several
activities, such as (1) the declaration of Healthy Cities Days, (2) the
application of state transportation grant funds for trail development, (3) the
construction of the South Fork Trail, and (4) a walking program. The
declaration of Healthy Cities Days is a new program and will be targeted for a
week in April to coincide with Trail Days.
The California Healthy Cities Project requires that Charter Cities renew their
application for participation each year. A resolution is attached declaring
City support for renewing its application and the 1992-93 activities.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal.impact associated with the application renewal.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the City Council receive this report and approve
Resolution Number 92-168 authorizing Healthy Cities Days, the renewal of its
application for the 1992-93 Healthy Cities Project, and approval of associated
projects.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA APPROVING THE APPLICATION
FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE THIRD YEAR OF THE
CALIFORNIA HEALTHY CITIES:PROJECT AND FOR
THE SANTA CLARITA VALLEY HEALTHY CITIES DAYS
WHEREAS, the Western Consortium for Public Health has initiated the
California Healthy .Cities Project to contribute to the quality of life in
cities and ultimately the health status of its residents;.and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clarita has established_a high priority for
the improvement and preservation of high quality of life for its residents; and
WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clarita is a Charter City of the Healthy
Cities Project and has actively participated in the Healthy Cities Project
since its inception in 1990; and
WHEREAS, the California Healthy Cities Project provides assistance in
identifying external sources of funds and program resources for projects such
as Santa Clarita's Open Space Preservation Project, Trail Systems and Walking
Program; and
WHEREAS, the designation of Healthy Cities Days will provide notice to
our residents and surrounding communities of our support and continuing
involvement in the Healthy Cities Project by our City.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City Council hereby resolves:
The continuation of activities with the California Healthy Cities Project;
and
That it will proclaim "Healthy Cities Days" to coincide with our Trail
Days Projects in April 1993; and
That it herewith appoints the Director of Parks and Recreation. to execute
and submit all documents necessary for the completion of the aforementioned
items.
