COMMUTER BUS SURVEY
Public Works
City Manager Appn
Item to be presented
On April 21, 1992, Council requested that a survey be conducted of commuter bus
passengers to determine the interest in commuter rail.
The Transit Division distributed the attached survey form to commuters from
May 12 -.18, 1992.
In addition to asking whether or not passengers were interested in commuter rail, staff sought
information regarding interest in the rail station park and ride, the distance people work from
Union Station and which buses they rode to and from downtown Los Angeles.
Attached are the results of the survey and staff's interpretation.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff requests that the Council accept and file the attached information.

COMMUTER SURVEY
As most of you are aware, Santa Clarita will have a Metrolink rail
station operational in October. The station will be located on Soledad
adjacent to the Saugus Speedway. The train fare will probably be
between $4.50:- $5.00 and take approximately one hour to arrive in
downtown Los Angeles. We intend to use the station for a commuter
bus park and ride lot. Santa Clarita Transit is attempting to determine
the effect of rail service on the current commuter bus system. We
would also appreciate your input on other matters pertaining to
commuter service.

Survey Results
The average daily ridership on the commuter bus service is 250 passengers. A total of 177
surveys were returned. The following are the results garnered from those responses:
1. When Metrolink opens, I plan to take the train:
Yes
17 or 9.6%
No
152 or 85.9 %
Maybe
8 or 4.5%
Based on the above percentages, commuter bus would lose as many as 35 passengers
each day, which is approximately one bus load. Of the reasons given for not taking
the train, most common was the fare.
2. I would be parking at the rail station whether I use the train or bus.
Yes
41 or 23.2%
No
127 or 71.8 %
Maybe
9 or 5.0%
The City could expect approximately 71 bus passengers to utilize the rail station
parking lot.
3. I work approximately blocks from Union Station.
Shortest distance from Union Station 2 blocks
Longest distance from Union Station 15 miles
Average distance from Union Station 17 blocks
One reason that more bus passengers are not going over to rail is the distance
between their work and Union Station.
4. I currently take the .#— bus in the morning and the # bus in the
evening.

This question was included in an attempt to validate the survey. The responses are
fairly indicative of the average ridership for each bus.
Next fiscal year each commuter bus will have a net cost of $3,456 per month to operate or
$41,472 per year based on the current 46% farebox ratio. Adding one bus to the schedule
from July 1, 1992 until the rail service begins on October 31, 1992 would cost $13,824.
