The Transit Division distributed the attached survey form to commuters from May 12 -.18, 1992. In addition to asking whether or not passengers were interested in commuter rail, staff sought information regarding interest in the rail station park and ride, the distance people work from Union Station and which buses they rode to and from downtown Los Angeles. Attached are the results of the survey and staff's interpretation. RECOMMENDATION Staff requests that the Council accept and file the attached information. The station will be located on Soledad adjacent to the Saugus Speedway. The train fare will probably be between $4.50:- $5.00 and take approximately one hour to arrive in downtown Los Angeles. We intend to use the station for a commuter bus park and ride lot. Santa Clarita Transit is attempting to determine the effect of rail service on the current commuter bus system. We would also appreciate your input on other matters pertaining to commuter service. 1. 2. 3. 4. When the Metrolink opens, I plan to take the train. I currently take the # bus in the morning and the # bus in the evening. RMP , P Survey Results The average daily ridership on the commuter bus service is 250 passengers. A total of 177 surveys were returned. The following are the results garnered from those responses: 1. When Metrolink opens, I plan to take the train: Yes 17 or 9.6% No 152 or 85.9 % Maybe 8 or 4.5% Based on the above percentages, commuter bus would lose as many as 35 passengers each day, which is approximately one bus load. Of the reasons given for not taking the train, most common was the fare. 2. I would be parking at the rail station whether I use the train or bus. Yes 41 or 23.2% No 127 or 71.8 % Maybe 9 or 5.0% The City could expect approximately 71 bus passengers to utilize the rail station parking lot. 3. I work approximately blocks from Union Station. Shortest distance from Union Station 2 blocks Longest distance from Union Station 15 miles Average distance from Union Station 17 blocks One reason that more bus passengers are not going over to rail is the distance between their work and Union Station. 4. The responses are fairly indicative of the average ridership for each bus. Next fiscal year each commuter bus will have a net cost of $3,456 per month to operate or $41,472 per year based on the current 46% farebox ratio. Adding one bus to the schedule from July 1, 1992 until the rail service begins on October 31, 1992 would cost $13,824. bussurvy.agn
