HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-10-13 - AGENDA REPORTS - EDUCATION CURRICULUM 92 184 (2)r AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: October 13, 1992 SUBJECT: EDUCATION CURRICULUM Resolution No. 92-184 DEPARTMENT: Public Works City Manager Approval Item to be presented by; Education is an integral part of the City's Source Reduction, Recycling, Composting and Hazardous Waste programs. The success of these programs depends on public participation. Education is a critical factor in public participation. Education as defined in the City's Source Reduction and Recycling Element (SRRE) refers to school curricula.. The Solid Waste division has reviewed several published. curricula (see Attachment A) and has selected the "Recycle Today!" program issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the City's curriculum. "Recycle Today!" is available free of charge from the U.S. EPA, and is designed as a nation-wide educational curriculum. The curriculum addresses a wide range of solid waste issues for ages K-12, and each chapter corresponds to a specific age level. The "Recycle Today!" kit includes the following materials: Curriculum "Let's Reduce and Recycle: A Curriculum for Solid Waste Awareness" How -to -Handbook School Recycling Programs: A Handbook for Educators Poster Ride the Wave of the Future: Recycle Today! Comic Book Adventure of the Garbage Gremlin: Recycle and Combat a Life of Grime Promotional Flyer Recycle Today! Educational Materials for Grades K-12 A team of.City and volunteer staff will be making presentations at school superintendent meetings to introduce the curriculum. The curriculum will be made available to each school in every district. The curriculum will be packaged under the City's seal. RECOMMENDATION Adopt Resolution No. 92-184 endorsing the U.S. EPA Education curriculum. ATTACHMENTS Resolution No. 92-184 Curriculum Informational Sheet/3---9� Adopted: 1b -13--9,.c>9— f•myerlula Iter.: _ RESOLUTION NO. 92-184 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, DESIGNATING AN EDUCATION CURRICULUM TO PROMOTE SOURCE REDUCTION, RECYCLING AND COMPOSTING PROGRAMS IN THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA. WHEREAS, on September 24, 1991, the City of Santa Clarita adopted its Source Reduction and Recycling Element (SRRE) in compliance with the mandates of the California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989, and WHEREAS, the SRRE for the City recommends the "Recycle Today!" curriculum developed and published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an education curriculum for grades K-12, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Santa Clarita that the City does hereby adopt the "Recycle Today!" education curriculum. PASSED, APPROVED, AND ADOPTED THIS day of 1992. Currently a number of recycling curricula are available for City-wide use. By providing a uniform curriculum for each school in Santa Clarita, a consistent and grade specific educational program can be achieved. Total enrollment figures for the 1992-93 school year are indicated below: Elementary School Districts: Newhall, Saugus Union, and Sulphur Springs Anticipated enrollment of 19,820 at 23 elementary schools Junior/Senior High Schools: William S. Hart Union School District Anticipated enrollment of 11,054 students at eight junior and senior high schools
