Division implemented an .after school " program at Emblem -Elementary' School. .Shortly after the school year began, , staff realized that the City's program was not needed due. to the. existing Boys and Girls Club _program. The City relocated .the after", school program .to .another site in need of assistance. .Recently the Boys and Girls Club of the Santa Clarita Valley came to the City requesting assistance in maintaining the operation of their Emblem School, site. Due to a decrease in their United Way allocations and -proceeds from their annual auction, the club is .finding it -:necessary to consider a restructuring of their organization. The Boys and Girls Club currently operates a program for children seven to seventeen years of -age at the Emblem site. .Hours of operation are 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. during the school year,. and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on school holidays. Approximately 45-55. youths participate on an ongoing basis. The City would be able to assist parents .in this area by placing two Recreation Leaders at Emblem Elementary. from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the.regular school year. The Recreation Division currently has funds budgeted .for after school programs, and was in the process of determining a site when the Boys and. Girls Club approached the City. ' The _City would also _ provide an. adequate ,supply of. equipment (balls,. games, etc.), and arts and crafts materials, for as long as the need exists., RECOMMENDATION The Parks and Recreation Commission recommends the' implementation of an after school program at Emblem Elementary School beginning in September 1992: KP/CB:PRCOUNC.174 A PTflo U, ED
