SUBJECT: Emblem School Site/Boys and rls Club
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
BACKGROUND
In the .fall of 1991, the Recreation. Division implemented an .after school
" program at Emblem -Elementary' School. .Shortly after the school year began, ,
staff realized that the City's program was not needed due. to the. existing Boys
and Girls Club _program. The City relocated .the after", school program .to
.another site in need of assistance.
.Recently the Boys and Girls Club of the Santa Clarita Valley came to the City
requesting assistance in maintaining the operation of their Emblem School,
site. Due to a decrease in their United Way allocations and -proceeds from
their annual auction, the club is .finding it -:necessary to consider a
restructuring of their organization.
The Boys and Girls Club currently operates a program for children seven to
seventeen years of -age at the Emblem site. .Hours of operation are 2:00 to
7:00 p.m. during the school year,. and 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on school
holidays. Approximately 45-55. youths participate on an ongoing basis. The
City would be able to assist parents .in this area by placing two Recreation
Leaders at Emblem Elementary. from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday,
during the.regular school year. The Recreation Division currently has funds
budgeted .for after school programs, and was in the process of determining a
site when the Boys and. Girls Club approached the City. ' The _City would also _
provide an. adequate ,supply of. equipment (balls,. games, etc.), and arts and
crafts materials, for as long as the need exists.,
