Fire District Benefit Assessment Adjustment
Fire Department
The recently approved budget for the State of California contains revenue
reductions to Special Districts. The anticipated reduction to the Los Angeles
County Consolidated Fire Protection District for Fiscal Year 1992/93 is
$35,000,000.
This reduction in state revenues to the Los Angeles County Consolidated Fire
Protection District translates into the closure of approximately 25 engine
companies throughout the district. Three engine companies within the City. of
Santa Clarita and two companies serving unincorporated areas of the Santa
Clarita Valley have been identified as prime candidates for closure.
The Fire District anticipates significantly increased response times and
potential loss of life and property should the local station closures occur.
The best available solution to this critical public safety .issue is an
adjustment to the District Benefit Assessment for 1992/93. The adjustment
would be in the form of an increase per household from $14 to $35 annually.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will be considering such action on
September 17, 1992. Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman has
requested the City of Santa Clarita support the Benefit Assessment adjustment
to ensure adequate fire service protection for the City of Santa Clarita and
adjacent communities.
Transmit to the Members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors
statements of support for an adjustment to the Los Angeles County Consolidated.
Fire Protection District Benefit Assessment.

e .recen y approve mia State budget reduced revenues to Special Districts. The
reduction to the Consolidated Fire Protection District (Los Angeles County Fire Department) was
approximately $35 million for the 1992-1993 budget. Cost reduction measures. by the District
have already trimmed approximately $10 million so the actual impact, is approximately $25
million.
The impact of this budget reduction would result in the closure of approximately 25 engine
companies. Prior plarming, based on a $30 million reduction, indicated a need to close three
engine companies in Santa Clarita and two more that serve the Santa Clarita Valley. I believe this
reduction of service levels would result in unacceptable response. times and losses of life and
property.
The best available solution for this critical problem is an adjdstment.to the District Benefit
Assessment for the 1992-1993 budget year. The Board of Supervisors will vote on a proposed
adjustment on September 17, 1992. I am requesting support from the City of Santa Clarita in the
form of City communication to Supervisor Michael Antonovich and other Board members in
support of a Benefit Assessment adjustment.
If you have any questions -regarding this request, please let me hear from you.
Sincerely yours,
P. MIICCHAEL FREEMAN
