The proposal was to consider adding two new members to the five -member Commission. The City Council's intent was to explore the merits of adding singular interest members, specifically for teen and seniors issues. Subsequently, further discussion led to whether the two new members would have voting rights or would be added in an ex officio status. The Parks and Recreation Commission reached a consensus agreement. Their recommendation to Council would be to not add two additional members at this time. The Parks and Recreation Commission acknowledges and supports the City Council's desire to actively seek out and fully understand the recreational needs of all segments of the population of the City of Santa Clarita. Additionally, the Parks and Recreation Commission strongly endorses the concept of maintaining an open and accessible Commission which encourages input and feedback from all viewpoints and members of the public. However, the Commission expressed concern over the possibility of unintentionally developing special interest affiliations on the Commission itself. Currently, all five members of the Commission are regarded as general interest Commissioners. None of the Commissioners is charged with a geographic district or recreational specialty within the City. It• was felt that the addition of singular interest Commissioners may encourage other special interest groups to feel the need to have specialized representation on the Commission. The Parks and Recreation Commission recommends that the City Council not add two singular interest Commissioners at this time. KP/JD:dis PRCOUNC.135 Agenda Item:
