SUBJECT: Renewal of Two Tree Maintenanontracts
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
BACKGROUND
The Urban Forestry section of the Parks Department is seeking from the City
Council approval to renew two tree maintenance contracts for one additional
year.
Provisions in the contracts allow us.to renew them at the same cost and terms
of the original signed contracts, or the contractors may negotiate a price
increase to compensate for operating cost increases.
The first contract to be renewed -is with Golden Bear Arborist, Inc. Golden
Bear provides tree trimming, removal, and preservation services for the City
throughout the year. Golden Bear is seeking a third and final year, renewal
with a price increase of 7 percent. For the past two years, Golden Bear's
contract costs have stood at $224,710 per year. Their proposed 7 percent
increase will raise the contract cost for the third year to $240,439, which
the City has rounded to $240,000.
Golden Bear substantiates its 7 percent increase based on higher operation
costs, i.e., training of personnel, increase of wages and benefits, a
7 percent workmen's compensation rate increase, waste disposal, and fuel cost.
The Urban Forestry section recommends renewal of the Golden Bear Arborist
contract based on their professionalism and very competitive prices. In
addition, Golden Bear is well versed in our procedures, thus reducing the
amount of administrative time needed to set up and administer a new contract.
The Urban Forestrysection also requests the renewal of the contract between
the City and Arbor Tree Surgery.- Arbor Tree provides tree pest control, weed
abatement, and fertilization services for the City throughout the year. Arbor
Tree is seeking renewal at the same cost schedule and terms as per the
original signed contract.
Arbor Tree provides work for the City on an as -needed basis, and the City is
billed per the original contract price schedule. Their price schedule will
remain the same, and the cost shall not exceed $55,000 for the year.
The Urban Forestry section recommends the renewal of the Arbor Tree Surgery,
contract based on the excellent service provided to the City over the past
year. n
