Harris DATE: September 8, 1992 SUBJECT: Follow -Up to Ralph Killmeyer's concerns about consumer prices in the Santa Clarita Valley DEPARTMENT: Community Development BACKGROUND On August 25, 1992, Mr. Ralph Killmeyer addressed the City Council regarding his concerns about consumer prices in the Santa Clarita Valley.. To substantiate his claim, Mr. Killmeyer. presented the City Council with an informal survey completed between July 15-18, 1992, comparing gasoline prices of the Santa Clarita Valley to the communities of Santa Rosa, Vacaville, Rio Vista, the San Fernando Valley, and Coalinga. He determined that prices for similar fuel products in these communities were $0.06-0.10 higher per gallon. In response to Mr. Killmeyer, the City Council directed staff to bring this item back to tonight's meeting. ANALYSIS Community Development - Economic Development Division reviewed the concerns of Mr. Killmeyer and confirmed informally that consumer pricing of particular markets, such as gasoline products, are higher in the Santa Clarita Valley. Oil company representatives, such as Shell Oil, Unocal, and Chevron were contacted to determine the reason for a variance in pricing. In summary, staff was informed that most service stations are independently owned and typically have the autonomy to determine their individual competitive prices. The City does not regulate prices of private goods and services. Mr. Killmeyer has suggested that a volunteer citizens be appointed to monitor consumer prices in the Santa Clarita Valley with comparisons of prices in the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys. The local Chambers of Commerce have been informed of this item. The Chambers of Commerce typically administer the integration business and community affairs and can assume a lead function in the implementation of a committee/work program. Staff recommends that the City Council refer this subject to the Chambers of Commerce for action expressing City concerns. LMH:DDP:994 APPROVER Agenda Iten:
