SUBJECT: PROPOSED SANTA CLARITA TRANSIT SERVICE CHANGES
FOR OCTOBER 26, 1992
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
BACKGROUND
On October 26, 1992 Metrolink Commuter Rail Service will begin operating between Santa
Clarita and Los Angeles Union Station. To coincide with that date, the Santa Clarita
Metrolink Station will become the hub of the local transit system, both to facilitate bus -to -bus
transfers as well as bus -to -rail connections.
The proposed changes in transit service are for the most part precipitated by the relocation of
the transit hub from River Oaks Shopping Center to Metrolink. In addition, some minor
service extensions are proposed and some other changes due to safety concerns are being
considered.
SUMMARY OF PROPOSED CHANGES
1. Routes 10/20 which operate on Soledad .Canyon Road out to Shadow Pines would be
combined with routes 60/70 which operate to Val Verde and Castaic. This results in
a single route connecting Canyon Country and Metrolink with Valencia Town Center,
Valencia Industrial Center, Val Verde and Castaic.
2. Routes 15/25 which serve Valencia would be extended from the Valencia Town .
Center to Metrolink. These routes would no longer be combined with routes .10/20;
however, there would be a timed transfer at Metrolink. Route 15 would also be
extended to serve the Newhall Senior Center.
3. Routes 30/40 which serve the Saugus area would be extended to Metrolink. These
two routes would continue to serve Valencia Town Center. Route 40 may be
extended to LARC Ranch if Los Angeles County certifies that the bridge leading to
the ranch can withstand bus traffic.

4. Route 35/45 - these routes would be extended to Metrolink from Valencia Town
Center. Also under consideration is eliminating service on Placenta Canyon
(Route 45) and Valley and Maple (Route 35) due to safety concerns and low
ridership. Instead, Route 35/45 would be consolidated into a single route and
extended up Lyons to "Hamburger Hill" which is also the location of a new apartment
complex and the Amtrak bus stop.
Route 50/55 would operate to Metrolink instead of Valencia Town Center. These two
routes would be consolidated into one route eliminating the segment of service along
Soledad Canyon Road between Metrolink and Whites Canyon. This segment
duplicates service provided by lines 10/20. Frequency of service would improve from
every 90 minutes to every 60 minutes.
6. Route 799 - the commuter bus to Los Angeles would add a stop at the Metrolink
Station. The inbound route in Los Angeles would return to 7th Street. Buses were
shifted from 7th Street to 6th Street to accommodate Metro Rail construction which is
now complete.
7. Stevenson Ranch - Los Angeles County has agreed to fully fund tripper service
between Stevenson Ranch and various schools in Santa Clarita. This service would
probably start in September 1992.
STAFF ACTIONS
Staff is currently preparing draft schedules and maps and will seek public input at three town
meetings during the fust half of September. Proposals will be revised based on public input
so that new schedules can be printed and distributed at least one week in advance of the
service changes. (See attached Public Participation schedule).
RECOMMENDATION
