Program Update DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation BACKGROUND The S.E.C.U.R.E.. Program (Santa Clarita Educated Communities, United in Response to Emergencies) was formally introduced to the community on January 15 at City Hall. The Program's success is based on the quality and quantity of its volunteers. Four advisors have assisted in the program development and the training of 23 S.E.C.U.R.E. trainers. Further trainings are being offered in January and February, with 30 residents currently enrolled.- The City provides the training materials and identifying uniform, which consists of a polo shirt and a name badge. The trainers are responsible for visiting neighborhoods and teaching families how to recognize -and reduce hazards within their homes. They will also assist in the development of family disaster plans, neighborhood skills and resource check lists. The program is presented in two two-hour sessions, with the residents receiving A Guide to Being S.E.C.U.R.E. for their homes. This booklet is intended to be a resource and a tool to assist each family in developing and retaining important family information. The community has been divided into .three zones based on geography. The program will be presented in each zone as follows: Newhall/Valencia Tuesday, February 4, 7:00 p.m. Placerita Junior High Saugus Wednesday, February.5, 7:00 p.m. Saugus High School Canyon Country Thursday, February 6, 7:00 p.m. Canyon High School At these zone kick-offs, a short preparedness presentation will be followed by information on S.E.C.U.R.E. registration. Based upon the outstanding support shown so far, the goals of this program include: - Generate 2,000 new family disaster plans - Recruit 200 volunteer disaster workers Agenda Item: Increase percentage of households with emergency supplies.by 50X Develop and expand the S.E.C.U.R.E. program for seniors, schools, daycare providers and businesses It is recommended that the City Council receive and file this report. Three Major Components: 1) To identify and reduce household and neighborhood hazards 2) To create Family Disaster Plans 3) To identify neighborhood skills (i.e. electri- cians, medical personnel, individuals certified in First Aid, etc.) Zone Meetings on February 4 - 6, 1992, mark introduction of S.E.C.U.R.E. program to community February 4, 1992 - Newhall/Valencia, Placerita Jr. High - 7 p.m. February 5, 1992 - Saugus, Saugus High 7 p.m. February 6, 1992 - Canyon Country, Canyon High 7 p.m. As of January 30, 1992, 50 Trainers will be certified! As of February 29, 1992, there will be approximately 55 S.E.C.U.R.E. Councilmember Information and instruction on the identification and mitigation Jan Heidt of hazards in your home and neighborhood Councilmember Assistance with developing your family and neighborhood disaster plans Assistance in developing your neighborhood skills and resources lists "A Guide to Being SECURE," an easy -reference booklet Information regarding future training sessions offered in Disaster Preparedness In order to receive training from the Volunteer SECURE Trainers 1. Recruit a minimum of ten people 2. Arrange for a suitable location to hold the training 3. Assign one person to be the group contact 4. .Complete the "Yes, I'm interested" postcard and return it to City Hall 5. Your request will be given to the first available Trainer, who will contact you to make arrangements for a mutually suitable -date.
