HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-06-23 - AGENDA REPORTS - VALENCIA SCHOOL LOADING ZONE (2)AGENDA REPORT City Manager be presented CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: June 23, 1992 SUBJECT: VALENCIA VALLEY SCHOOL - PASSENGER LOADING ZONE/CARRIZO DRIVE Resolution No. 92-121 DEPARTMENT: Community Development BACKGROUND Mrs. Gerry Morey, Principal of Valencia Valley School, has requested a passenger loading zone (drop-off and pick-up area) to be established in front of the school (Carrizo Drive). A copy of the letter is attached. A traffic engineering survey was conducted, and the request of a passenger loading zone was evaluated. The requested area for a passenger loading zone is currently used by parents to drop off and pick up their children. The same area is frequently used by school employees to park their vehicles during the school hours. This present situation. creates congestion in the parking area, as each parent's vehicle needs. to maneuver between parked vehicles to find a space for dropping off or picking up their children. It is believed that congestion in the school frontage area would be minimized if a passenger loading zone is established (north side of Carrizo Drive). There are many curb parking spaces available on Carrizo Drive within walking distance from the school, and the recommended zone will leave 100 -feet of curb space .west of the proposed zone for school employees and visitors to park their vehicles. In addition, since the proposed zone is needed during school hours and our observations showed that the area is mostly used by school -generated vehicles during the school hours, it is believed that the potential impact of establishing the passenger loading zone in spaces frequently used by visitors in this area would not be significant. This work is estimated to cost approximately $500, which can be accommodated in our current traffic striping and signing budget category. Adopt Resolution No. 92-121, authorizing a passenger loading zone for a distance of 200 feet to be established on the north side of Carrizo Drive. Direct staff to have the appropriate signs to effect this passenger loading zone in July 1992.
