INCREASE MINIMUM HEIGHT OF ADDRESS NUMBERS
Ordinance No. 94-4
Community Development
On January 11, 1994, the City Council directed staff to prepare an ordinance amending the Fire
Code (Title 22, Chapter 22.01) portion of the Santa Clarita Municipal Code to increase the minimum
size of building address numbers from three inches and five inches to six inches. The current fire
regulation requires that address numbers be a minimum of three inches in height, except when a
structure is set back more than 150 feet from the street. In this case, the address numbers must
be a minimum of five inches in height.
The size of address numbers is an issue of some concern to emergency response personnel (i.e.,
fire, sheriff, ambulance, etcetera). Emergency personnel depend upon address numbers to quickly
and accurately find the location of the emergency. If address numbers are too small or are not
readily visible on structures, emergency response efforts can be severely handicapped.
Increasing the minimum size of address numbers to six inches will assist emergency response
personnel in their efforts. The Captain of the Fire Department has indicated that any increase in
the size of address numbers will be supported.
This ordinance will be applicable to new development and will be a condition of receipt of approval
for occupancy. The ordinance will apply to existing structures that have undergone construction
requiring a building permit.
Introduce Ordinance No. 94-4 increasing the minimum size of address numbers to six inches and
pass on to the second reading.
