SUBJECT: Authorization to Bid the Santa Clara River Trail - Phase I
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
BACKGROUND
Staff has completed the construction plans and specifications to install Phase I of the Santa Clara
RlverTrail on the maintenance road that runs eastfrom Soleclad Canyon Road to Sierra Highway
on the north side of the Santa Clara River. The construction drawings and bid document are in
the City Clerk's office for Council review.
The community was invited to several public participation meetings to assist in the planning and
design of their trail. The citizens attending the meetings expressed a strong desire and need for
this trail in their community to provide commuting and recreational opportunities in the Canyon
Country area.
The Santa Clara River Trail project consists of installing a wood fence along with an
undercrossing at the Whites Canyon bridge and Sierra Highway to keep bicyclists and pedestrians
in a safe corridor. New asphalt and access gates will also be installed on various portions of
unimproved maintenance road.
The construction of this project will begin this summer and will be complete in fall 1994, with the
trail opening for public use. The estimated cost is approximately $1 million. Funds are available
through a Proposition 116 grant in the amount of $800,000 and the Public Finance Authority in
the amount of $200,000.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that City Council approve the plans and specifications, and authorize staff to
advertise for bids on the Santa Clara River Trail.
