Concerned residents and merchants, aware of the need for more alternative recreation programming component's within the Santa Clarita Valley, asked the City for assistance. The City of Santa Clarita, through the support and commitment of the City Council, conducted the Newhall Study. From the input of the Newhall Study and the results of numerous other interviews with citizens and merchants, it was determined that a community center would significantly benefit the Newhall area. Furthermore, a community center would significantly enhance and compliment the efforts of the Anti -gang Task Force, the Community Development Block Grant Program, and any future redevelopment efforts. The future community center would have several elements serving a large population base. One element would be a sub -station for the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Department. A sub -station would increase accessibility to the department while helping to establish more personal relationships between the Sheriffs Department, local merchants, and residents. Another element would be the possible expansion of the Santa Clarita Valley Service Center which would help offer its important social programs to the Valley residents. There is a possibility for expansion in the community center for the Newhall area Head Start Program, as well. The final element would be the Santa Clarita Valley's first boxing program and facility. The boxing facility would be the first of the elements to be programmed. The facility offers a positive physical activity unique to the Santa Clarita Valley, while delivering programming targeted to at -risk youth. Staff has identified the former Chatham Becker building, located at 24406 San Fernando Road, as the ideal location. The building's size (7,200 square feet), open space, and close proximity to local neighborhoods and schools make this a favorable locale. The base cost of the building's lease is $.80 per square foot per month. Staff is currently negotiating a 3 to 5 year lease.
