HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994-12-13 - AGENDA REPORTS - HALF PRICE PASS SALES BUS (2)AGENDA REPORT City Manager Approval Item to be presented by) CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: December 13, 1994 SUBJECT: Half Price Pass Sales for San Fernando Valley Commuter Bus Service DEPARTMENT: Public Works Santa Clarita Transit initiated three commuter express routes between Santa Clarita and the San Fernando Valley in February 1994 in response to the Northridge Earthquake. Ridership continued to be strong after highway capacity was restored and over 100 customers requested permanent operation of the three routes, prompting the City to continue operation of these services. Ridership has remained strong on Line 796 , which serves Warner Center. However ridership on Line's 797 and 798, which serve Chatsworth and Van Nuys respectively, dropped in September. Both lines experienced reliability problems during that month which apparently was the major factor for the ridership loss, while the loss of a major employer and a reduction of service on each line also contributed. Santa Clarita Transit has worked with the contractor Antelope Valley Bus Inc. to resolve the reliability problems and is embarking on targeted marketing efforts to attract new customers. Staff believes a one month "sale" of monthly passes for the San Fernando Valley will help in efforts to gain back lost customers and attract new customers. Staff proposes selling January passes at a 50 % discount. A modest increase in pass sales will offset any revenue loss, and the transit division has received credits from the contractor for missed trips, reducing the overall cost of service. RECOMMENDATION City Council approve the sale of January San Fernando Valley Commuter bus passes at a 50 % discount. Agenda ' k
