National Crime Prevention Month DEPARTMENT: City Manager BACKGROUND City Manager Approve Item to be presented Cecilia Burda At the September 27, City Council meeting, Council proclaimed October National Crime Prevention Month and received an informational report on activities planned for the month. Tonight staff will give Council an update on and preview of activities; The Signal Newspaper in cooperation with the Santa Clarita Valley Anti -Gang Task is sponsoring a month long educational advertising campaign. The schedule is as follows: Saturday, October 1; "Don't Let Your Family Go Down The Tube.", Sunday, October 2, "7 Things Parents Can Do To Prevent Gun Violence, Thursday, October 6, "Guns Hurt Kids.", Saturday, October 8, Coloring Contest Advertisement; Sunday; October 9, "Gangs Not My Kid.", Tuesday, October 11, "So I'll Be Home Alone, Do I Know...... Thursday, October 13, "Parents and Kids and Bullies.", Saturday, October 15, Coloring Contest Advertisement, Sunday, October 16, "Take Back Your Neighborhood.", Tuesday, October 18, "Stop Vandalism Now.", Friday, October 21, "Mad?Frustrated?Ready to Explode?", Saturday, October 22, Coloring Contest Advertisement, Sunday, October 23, "Volunteers --The Bottom Line.", and Friday; October 28, "Keep Fit, Stay Safe." On Saturday October 8, the Intervention Committee of the Anti -Gang Task Force developed and implemented, in cooperation with The Master's College, a free baseball/basketball clinic for young people in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. Bi -lingual flyers were distributed to all school districts, and bi-lingual posters were placed throughout the community. The Lion's Club provided free hot dogs and chips for all participants. Local schools districts are participating by distributing flyers that address the following issues: 'Turn Off the Violence," Ten Smart Routes to Bicycle Safety," "Alcohol is Number One," "At Home Alone --A Parents' Guide," "Dealing With Gun Violence," "Don't Lose a Friend To Drugs," "Making Peace --Tips on Managing Conflict," and "Working Together to Create Safe Schools." Agenda Item: Thursday, October 27 is National "Turn Off The Violence" day. Volunteers will be asking local video outlets to participate in this program by suggesting non-violent videos to their customers. The focus of this day is not only videos, but violent television programs, violent music, and violent actions. On Sunday, October 30 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Department will be sponsoring their annual Haunted Jailhouse. At this time selected judges will award prizes to the winners of a month long coloring contest advertising Crime Prevention Month, RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends Council receive and file this report.
