HomeMy WebLinkAbout1994-03-22 - AGENDA REPORTS - REMOVAL EARTHQUAKE DEBRIS (2)AGENDA REPORT City Manager Approval Item to be presented by: Jeff Kolin NEW BUSINESS DATE: March 22, 1994 SUBJECT: Award of Removal and Recovery of Earthquake Debris Contract DEPARTMENT: Public Works BACKGROUND As a result of the earthquake on January 17, 1994; the City of Santa Clarita has experienced an increased amount of constriction and demolition debris in the wastestream. Debris materials generated from block walls, chimneys, sidewalks, and roadways are stockpiled at the City's debris collection site, The California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB939) requires that the City of Santa Clarita reduce the amount of waste going to landfills by 25 %_by the year 1995, and 50% by the year 2000. Consequently, the City has requested formal proposals from area contractors to provide services for the processing and recycling of constriction and demolition debris for use in reconstruction projects. At this time, Staff is in the process of evaluating all proposals presented for this service. Therefore, additional information will be provided to the City Council on March 22. RECOMMENDATION Receive Staff's presentation and award the debris recycling contract to the most efficient, economical, and environmentally sound service provider_ In addition, authorize the Finance Director to set up appropriate, revenue and expenditure accounts in emergency fund 90. admin\dbmcy.rpt n41 ✓, j4'+ CITY OF SANTA CLARITA INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: George Caravalho, City Manager DATE: March 22, 1994 SUBJECT: Removal and Recovery of Earthquake Debris Bid Award On March 11, 1994, the Public Works Department opened formal bidding for the Removal and Recovery of Earthquake Debris Contract. The successful contractor will provide services for the removal and recovery of construction and demolition debris that has been stockpiled at the City provided site. On Monday, March 21, 1994, the following bids were received by the City Clerk. Company Unit Cost/Ton Other Costs Cornerstone 6.37 2310.03 Granite Construction 7.58 12,000.00 CA Rasmussen 8.40 8,500.00 Security Paving 12.25 ---- Cheyenne 18.80 467,000.00 Staff recommends that the project be awarded to The Cornerstone Recycling Group, the low bidder.
