San Fernando Road Tree Planting Project - Phase II
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
BACKGROUND
In November 1993, City Parks Planning staff completed the first phase of street tree planting
along the west side of San Fernando Road from Drayton Street to the Placerita Creek bridge in
conjunction with Phases III and IV of San Fernando Road widening. Approximately 99 trees were
planted along the roadway.
Staff has been pursuing the second phase of tree planting, and is in the process of completing
the construction plans and specifications to install additional street trees and a bubbler assembly
irrigation system along the MTA right-of-way on the east side of San Fernando Road from Magic
Mountain Parkway south to 1,000 feet past Circle J Ranch Road. At this time, staff estimates that
approximately 120 trees will be planted in Phase II. Plans and specifications are available in the
City Clerk's office for your review.
The original Caltrans Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation (EEM) grant for this project
totaled $161,000. Of this amount, $80,000 was spent on Phase I of the project. Phase II tree
planting is expected to begin in May and will be completed by mid-June at a cost of $80,000.
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that City Council authorize staff to advertise for bids on Phase II of the San
Fernando Road tree planting project.
