Dear Mayor:
If you ask most adults what made a difference in their life or what made it possible
for them to become successful, most people will point to an individual or an incident
or a specific opportunity that opened their eyes to their own potential. April 28
could be that kind of experience for millions of girls around the country.
What are we talking about? It's called Take Our Daughters to Work and it's a chance
for young girls to spend one day in the workplace with a parent, a relative, or
another adult. Last April, Take Our Daughters to Work was an incredible success --
over 1 million girls across the country went to work with mothers, fathers, aunts,
sisters, neighbors, and friends.
This year, the non-profit Hollywood Policy Center is proud to be the West Coast
Sponsor of Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Last year, participation on the West
Coast was limited to word-of-mouth, so few participated -- and that was a critical gap
in the program. So, this year, we are making a real effort to ensure that Take Our
Daughters to Work is a success on the West Coast. We can only do that with your
help as a mayor and leader of your community.
We are asking you to help ensure that under your leadership your city also makes
April 28 "Take Our Daughters to Work Day."
Because our home is in Los Angeles, we began our work here. The support from
elected officials in Los Angeles has been so gratifying, and we know it will be the
same elsewhere:
1) Mayor Riordan has officially proclaimed April 28th "Take Our
R E C E I V E! Daughters to Work Day."
{ d fid 2) The Los Angeles Unified School District has made it possible for
girls to participate by endorsing the day and by providing
CITY COUNCIL permission slips their parents can fill out and by not counting it
CITY OF SANTA CLARRA
as an unaccounted absence.

The Mayors and City Councils of West Hollywood and Santa
Monica have similarly proclaimed its support of the day.
The L.A. County Board of Supervisors will be introducing a
formal proclamation on April 5.
The California State Legislature will be issuing a concurrent
resolution.

But we know that Los Angeles' involvement above cannot insure the is only the
success of Take Our Daughters to Work on the West Coast -- and so, we are asking
for your help:
Your support would be helping in a few very key ways:
• A city resolution or proclamation (A draft copy of the LA -
resolution is included for your information).
• Allowing your city employees to participate in the day, either by
bringing their own daughters or other young girls.
• Placing the Day on all city calendars.
For your information, we have included with this letter a fact sheet on the day and a
list of the businesses and organizations supporting Take Our Daughters to Work. We'd
love to add your city — and others in your community. We have also included a
Take Our Daughters to Work flyer for you to post or circulate.
This day can be an opportunity for civic, business, and community leaders, as well as
families, churches, and schools, to unite in support of young girls and their futures,
and your initiative on this project will surely be noted.
If you do decide to adopt a resolution in support of Take Our Daughters to Work,
please let Cara DiMassa in our office know so that we can add your name to the
materials we distribute to the press throughout the West Coast. In the meantime,
thank you for your attention to this matter.
Take Our Daughters to Work may formally take place on April 28, but the benefits to
the girls and the community will continue far beyond that day.
Sincerely,
Kath

FACT SHEET
Take Our Daughters to Work is an effort to encourage young girls to see potential for
themselves in the workplace by spending one day at work with a parent, grandparent,
sibling, neighbor, family friend, or someone simply interested in giving them a chance.
Scheduled for April 28, 1994, Take Our Daughters to Work is sponsored nationally by the
Ms. Foundation and coordinated on the West Coast by the Hollywood Policy Center, a
non-profit organization.
Take Our Daughters to Work is a special opportunity not only for the millions of girls who
will participate, but also for the thousands of businesses and corporations that get to see
the workforce of the future and to simultaneously demonstrate their commitment to the
families of their employees_ and the value of women in the workplace.
The Hollywood Policy Center (HPC) is pleased to be the West Coastpartner for Take Our
Daughters to Work. The HPC is focusing its efforts on encouraging thousands of girls,
parents, teachers, and businesses throughout California to participate. With that in mind,
our current activities include:
• Targeting media activities to disseminate information about Take Our Daughters to
Work as broadly as possible over the next two months to the public through free
press, paid advertising, creative marketing, and targeted use of well-known
celebrities.
• Coordinating press activities on April 28 to ensure that both print and electronic
media cover a variety of stories throughout the Southern California area.
• Mailing outreach materials about Take Our Daughters to Work to thousands of
community-based organizations, professional associations, elected officials, schools,
social service agencies, charitable organizations and chambers of commerce.
• Coordinating with the Los Angeles Unified School District and other area school
districts to ensure that teachers and principals are promoting Take Our Daughters to
Work in the classroom and that prepared Boys and Girls "Lesson Plans are made
available to teachers. The HPC is also working with the school district to match
girls without someone to take them to work with local businesses so that everyone
has the opportunity to participate.
• Promoting general information about Take Our Daughters to Work including how
easy it is for adults, girls, and businesses to participate and how to get written
materials about the project from an 800 number.
• Working directly with businesses and corporations to encourage their participation
within their own offices as well as asking them to become a West Coast Sponsor
of Take Our Daughters to Work.
• Assisting sponsors of Take Our Daughters to Work in promoting the project both
inside and outside their company and creating activities for employees for the day,
