April 28 could be that kind of experience for millions of girls around the country. What are we talking about? It's called Take Our Daughters to Work and it's a chance for young girls to spend one day in the workplace with a parent, a relative, or another adult. Last April, Take Our Daughters to Work was an incredible success -- over 1 million girls across the country went to work with mothers, fathers, aunts, sisters, neighbors, and friends. This year, the non-profit Hollywood Policy Center is proud to be the West Coast Sponsor of Take Our Daughters to Work Day. Last year, participation on the West Coast was limited to word-of-mouth, so few participated -- and that was a critical gap in the program. So, this year, we are making a real effort to ensure that Take Our Daughters to Work is a success on the West Coast. We can only do that with your help as a mayor and leader of your community. We are asking you to help ensure that under your leadership your city also makes April 28 "Take Our Daughters to Work Day." Because our home is in Los Angeles, we began our work here. The support from elected officials in Los Angeles has been so gratifying, and we know it will be the same elsewhere: 1) Mayor Riordan has officially proclaimed April 28th "Take Our R E C E I V E! Daughters to Work Day." { d fid 2) The Los Angeles Unified School District has made it possible for girls to participate by endorsing the day and by providing CITY COUNCIL permission slips their parents can fill out and by not counting it CITY OF SANTA CLARRA as an unaccounted absence. COPIES TO CITY COU;; C. Y MANAGER, CITY Ci,:4_ „ C "rte The Mayors and City Councils of West Hollywood and Santa Monica have similarly proclaimed its support of the day. The L.A. County Board of Supervisors will be introducing a formal proclamation on April 5. The California State Legislature will be issuing a concurrent resolution. (OVER) 3679 Motor Avenue, Suite 300, Los Angeles, CA 90034 310-287-2803 310-287-2815 (fax) But we know that Los Angeles' involvement above cannot insure the is only the success of Take Our Daughters to Work on the West Coast -- and so, we are asking for your help: Your support would be helping in a few very key ways: • A city resolution or proclamation (A draft copy of the LA - resolution is included for your information). • Allowing your city employees to participate in the day, either by bringing their own daughters or other young girls. • Placing the Day on all city calendars. For your information, we have included with this letter a fact sheet on the day and a list of the businesses and organizations supporting Take Our Daughters to Work. We'd love to add your city — and others in your community. We have also included a Take Our Daughters to Work flyer for you to post or circulate. This day can be an opportunity for civic, business, and community leaders, as well as families, churches, and schools, to unite in support of young girls and their futures, and your initiative on this project will surely be noted. If you do decide to adopt a resolution in support of Take Our Daughters to Work, please let Cara DiMassa in our office know so that we can add your name to the materials we distribute to the press throughout the West Coast. In the meantime, thank you for your attention to this matter. Take Our Daughters to Work may formally take place on April 28, but the benefits to the girls and the community will continue far beyond that day.
