Item to be presented by
VATAMTEN R. I
SUBJECT: Appointment of Council Member to Los Angeles County Solid Waste
Committee
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
At their May 23, 1995 meeting, the City Council requested that staff provide additional
information regarding a potential City appointment to the Los Angeles County Solid Waste
Management Committee/Integrated Waste Management Task Force Membership.
Staff has contacted Kim Chudoba of the League of California Cities Southern California
Office/. According to Ms. Chudoba, there are two vacant alternative seats which the
committee must fill. These two vacant seats are currently held by the Los Angeles Division of
the League of California Cities, whom as an agency will determine how these appointments to
the committee will be filled.
The Integrated Waste Management Task Force recommends policy regarding the County Solid
Waste Management Plan, reviews proposed facilities and service compliance, and reviews and
comments on city source reduction and recycling elements. The Committee's areas of interest
include granting of revised finding of conformance to Landfills, status of landfills, and public
education and information on solid waste.
The Committee meets in the early afternoon, on the third Thursday of each month at the
County Public Works facility located at 900 South Fremont Avenue, Conference Room C, in
Alhambra. There is a meeting stipend of $25.00 per month, and representatives to this
committee must be an elected official. Appointments to the committee are for a three year
period.
Should the City Council choose to pursue an appointment to the Los Angeles County Solid
Waste Committee/Integrated Waste Management Task Force, it would be appropriate for the
City to designate a member of the Council for such an appointment; and submit a letter along
with a resume outlining this persons qualifications to the League of California Cities, Los
Angeles County Division.
