SUBJECT: FAMILY AND COMMUNITY COALITION
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Rick Putnam
In May 1995, Zonta, supported by the Soroptimists and the American Association of University
Women (AAUW), requested that City Council implement a Women's Commission. In
subsequent months, the initial committee of service organizatiohs expanded to include
representation from the school districts, Magic Mountain, community members, Youth Master
Plan Executive Committee, and local businesses. During these meetings, the committee's initial
focus also broadened to include family and community issues, as well as women's concerns.
Committee members developed the concept of a Community and Family Coalition. The
Coalition would address issues facing the community by funneling them to appropriate
organizations already serving the community and by assisting to identify the appropriate
resources. Issues to be addressed include those related to women, gender equity, youth, seniors,
and families. Examples include medical care for seniors in light of recent Federal cuts,
accessibility for disabled citizens into all public facilities, and equity for girls and women in the
classroom and workplace..
It is anticipated that leadership for the Family and Community Coalition will emerge from the
Coalition's initial meeting, and will draw from all interested participants.. Meetings are
currently suggested to be held on a quarterly basis, to be modified as needed.
The Committee supports the concept of a Family and Community Coalition that will serve as
a pilot program to determine the effectiveness of and the need for such a coalition.
City Council endorse formation of the Family and Community Coalition as a preliminary
approach to dealing with a broad scope of women and families issues.
