SUBJECT: METROLINK FACILITY ENHANCEMENT PROJECT - PHASES 11 & III
CONSTRUCTION
DEPARTMENT: Community Development
On March 8, 1994, Council approved the Community Advisory Panel's recommendation of Viqui
McCaslin as the artist for the City's first public art project. Council also approved Viqui's art
theme as that which relates to Native American Indian history, art and archaeology. Phase I
of the project included changing an existing tree planter into a shallow pond that represents a
diminishing animal watering hole. Additionally, the arched crossbeam of the outer canopy at
the top of the stairway was bordered by design tile that represents small animal images.
As part of Capital Improvement Project No. 96-087, providing facility enhancements to the
Metrolink Station, Phases II & III of the Facility Project will be completed. Phase II will install
a spill pond in what is now a planter located between the two main stairways. Phase III will
finish the tile application of all remaining arched canopy crossbeams. Both Phases II & III will
use glazed terra-cotta ceramic tiles identical to those used for Phase I. The tile colors will be
a turquoise background and dark green for the design pattern and hard -edged outline of the
small animals, which will be filled in solid with a deep salmon color. The intent of the
remaining project phases is to continue with the original theme approved by Council and create
a facade of a living environment through a historical and cultural approach,
Budget in the amount of $211,562 is currently allocated for this work. Transit account
No. 55-96087-227 has been established to track all costs associated with this project. Work is
scheduled to begin in Spring 1995 and will be completed by December 1995.
