Newman CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: September 12, 1995 SUBJECT: VALENCIA BOULEVARD/SOLEDAD CANYON ROAD MISCELLANEOUS STREET IMPROVEMENTS; SIGNING AND STRIPING; TRAFFIC SIGNAL MODIFICATIONS/INSTALLATION -PROJECT NO. 95-020 DEPARTMENT: Building & Engineering Services Department BACKGROUND On July 11, 1995, the City Council authorized the advertisement of the subject project. The subject project involves plans for improvements to improve traffic flow along the Valencia Boulevard/Soledad Canyon Road corridor. The improvements to be constructed in this project are as follows; Acceleration lanes, a right -turn pocket, median closures, median modifications, traffic signal modifications, one new traffic signal at the intersection of Solamint Road and Soledad Canyon Road, six -lane striping with raised pavement markers from the I-5 freeway to Galeton Road, and restriping with raised pavement markers from Galeton Road to Shadow Pines Boulevard. On Thursday, August 24, 1995, the following bids were received by the City Clerk: COMPANY LOCATION AMOUNT R.C. Becker & Son, Inc. Excel Paving Company Los Angeles Engineering, Inc. Funds in the amount of $720,000 are available for contract administration, inspection, and construction of this project in Account Nos. 28-95020-227 and 17-95020-227. R.C. Becker & Son, Inc. possesses a State Contractor's License and is in good standing with the State Contractor's License Board. The bid of $438,408.77 was reviewed for accuracy and conformance to the contract documents and was found to be complete. This contractor has done similar work for our City and for other agencies. The references indicated that this contractor has performed work to their satisfaction. RECOMMENDATION Award the contract to R.C. Becker & Son, Inc. for $438,408.77, and authorize a 20 percent contingency expenditure should any change orders to the contract become necessary, Authorize the City Manager or designee to approve all documents relating to this contract.
