INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: George Caravalho, City Manager
DATE: May 2, 1995
SUBJECT: Relationship between Transit and Land Use
Santa Clarita Transit has made considerable progress over the past three and a half years in
increasing transit use. However this has been accomplished in a physical environment that
presents many challenges. The purpose of tonight's presentation is to highlight these
challenges and discuss possible remedies.
The first part of the presentation will illustrate some particular pedestrian access deficiencies in,
the Santa Clarita; Valley. In the current MTA Call For Projects, Santa Clarita Transit
submitted an application to correct many of these deficiencies. Many deficiencies, such as the
lack of sidewalks in the Valencia Industrial Center are of such magnitude that it was not
practical to include in the current Call for Projects due to limited funds.
The second part of the presentation will consist of a twenty minute video produced by the
Metropolitan Transportation Development Board (MTDB) of San Diego. It will discuss the
relationship of land use and transit. The video's relevance to Santa Clarita, in addition to the
problems of access to bus stops, is it also touches on the problem speeding traffic and
congestion in suburban communities. The video presents ideas on how new suburban
development can be more pedestrian/transit friendly and also how to retrofit existing areas.
Following the video, staff will be available to answer questions regarding the issues discussed
in the slide/video presentation.
