HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996-05-14 - AGENDA REPORTS - 1996 SC 4TH JULY PARADE (2)May 14, 1996
Dear Mayor Boyer and Members of the City Council:
On behalf of the Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade Committee, I would like to thank
the City of Santa Clarita for co -sponsoring the 1996 Parade.
This year's parade theme is "life on the Frontier," acknowledging the fact that the
Fourth of July Parade and the Frontier Days Parade are being rolled into one big event for
the first time. All past participants in both parades have been invited. In addition, we have
already received well over 50 calls from people who have never been in a parade before.
We expect a huge turnout.
The parade will follow the same route as last year, ending at Newhall Park, where
the City will provide game booths and concerts. From there, it's off to Soledad Canyon
Road for four days of Frontier and carnival activities.
Ever since cityhood, the City has provided both Sheriffs and Public Works services
for the parade, This year, the City has graciously agreed to provide the necessary Sheriffs
services. However, it came to my attention late yesterday that funds are not being allocated
for the Public Works services that will be needed if theparade is to happen. These same
Public Works services will enable the Santa Clarita Runners to hold their annual 5-K run
along the parade route, prior to the parade.
Under normal circumstances; we would have taken this request to the Parks
Commission before coming to the City Council. But given the late date of this unexpected
snafu, weformally request the Council to direct staff to provide the usual Sheriffs and Public
Works services for the parade.
The Parade Committee understands the City's budgetary constraints and appreciates
the difficulty of budgeting for an. event that takes place just four days into the new fiscal
year. However, it should be noted that the City will not be asked to provide services for
a parade this September or October, because there won't be any parade in September or
October this year, This is it.
We have been given every indication that the City expects a parade. We have been
working on it with Parks Department staff and Sheriffs personnel for several months. Please
let us know your final decision as soon as possible, so we can know whether to proceed.
With your continued support, this will be the 70th time the people of the Santa
Clarita Valley have paraded through the streets of downtown Newhall. Please find it in your
hearts — and your budget — to continue this Santa Clarita tradition.
Sincerely,
on Worden, Chairman
Santa Clarita Fourth of July Parade j
