DATE: September 24, 1996
SUBJECT: AGREEMENT FOR DIAL -A -RIDE RADIO SERVICES
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
The City radio frequency assigned to Santa Clarita Transit is a shared frequency between Dial -A -
Ride (DAR) and fixed route drivers. Due to the possibility of emergency radio transmissions from
the DAR drivers, and a conflict of that transmission being blocked by fixed route drivers, the
Transit Division has been contracting with All Points Communications to supply a separate
communications radio frequency including a base radio and 15 mobile units. At this time, All
Points Communications is considered sole source due to entrance on Oat Mountain being limited,
a Los Angeles County -owned radio tower.
October 1, 1996, Santa Clarita Transit will be provided five Access Services, Inc. vehicles for
Americans with Disability Act compliance. These vehicles will be provided with the Dial -A -Ride
radio frequency, therefore, we will be ordering five additional radios for these vehicles. This will
be the only increase to this agreement over the four year renewal.
Transit staff is in the process of research and cost analysis on alternatives for Dial -A -Ride
communications including the possibility of receiving approval from the Federal Communication
Commissions for an additional city radio frequency.
Approve agreement for expenditure as appropriated for FY 96/97 in the amount of $21,780,
account 55-7000-243. Authorize the City Manager to execute agreement document.
