SUBJECT: COMMISSIONER COMPENSATION

BACKGROUND
This item is presented to the City Council for information purposes only.
City of Santa Clarita Parks & Recreation Commissioners and Planning Commissioners are
compensated monthly by the City for the hard work and dedication they provide to the City
Council and this community. This compensation is based on the number of meetings each
commissioner attends each month. The current compensation level is as follows:
Parks & Recreation Commissioners
$75.00/meeting
not to exceed $150.00/month.
Planning Commissioners
$105.00/meeting
not to exceed $420.00/month;
The Parks & Recreation Commission was created and established by the City Council to make
recommendations on matters relating to the recreation and parks for this community. Its
purpose is to monitor the needs of the community and work with staff to provide a balanced
recreation program; promote the Parks & Recreation Department programs plan for the
development of existing and future parks and open space and foster cooperation between the
City, the public and community groups to enhance recreation programs.
The Planning Commission was created and established by the City Council in accordance with
the provisions of the Planning Law of the State of California, the Subdivision Map Act and
pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 3 of Title 7 of the Government Code.
The Planning Commission considers and decides upon various applications for land use and
development. This body also advises the City Council on matters relating to land use and land
development in the City. This includes the development and implementation of the General
Plan, the Zoning Ordinance and other land use regulations and recommendations on
development applications..

Commissioner compensation has been adjusted twice since the Commissions' inception in 1988
as follows:
Parks & Recreation Commission Planning Commission
1988 $35.00/meeting $ 50.00/meeting
1989 $70.00/meeting $100.00/meeting
1991 $75.00/meeting $105.00/meeting
Commissioner compensation is designated in the Municipal Code, Chapters 2.26(Planning) and
2.28(Parks and Recreation). The City Council may adjust this compensation by amending the
Municipal Code though the adoption of an ordinance.
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council receive and review the information provided. Staff will return in 30 days
with a recommendation and a request to direct staff to include amounts specified in the
preparation of the Mscal Year 96-97 budget, with the intent that Commissioner compensation
adjustment will take effect on the same date as City Council compensation adjustment.
