HomeMy WebLinkAbout1996-01-23 - AGENDA REPORTS - ENDORSEMENT SC MARATHON (2)Item to be presented by: Rick Putnam CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: January 23, 1996 SUBJECT: CITY COUNCIL ENDORSEMENT REQUEST FOR THE SECOND ANNUAL CITY OF SANTA CLARITA MARATHON DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services As a result of hard work, the Santa Clarity Marathon Steering Committee conducted a successful first annual City of Santa Clarita Marathon on Sunday, November 12, 1995. Based on the event's success, the Marathon Steering Committee has begun preparing for the second annual race to be held on Sunday, November 10, 1996. Items under consideration include increasing the number of race entries from 500 to 1,500, potential re-routing of a portion of the race course, race sponsorship details, and City Council endorsement. At its January 11th meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended endorsement to the City Council, The steering committee is seeking endorsement from the City Council in its second year for use of the City name and logo for marketing purposes. An endorsement is essential for continued marketing, local business support, and sponsorship commitments necessary to support a larger event in this second year. The City Council endorsement will be a part of the marketing package sent to potential race sponsors. The steering committee is also requesting consideration for City subsidy of the marathon in the upcoming budget process. A formal request is attached to this report. 1. City Council adopt Resolution 96-9 recommending support of the second annual City of Santa Clarita Marathon, and; 2. Authorize consideration for City subsidy of the marathon in the upcoming Fiscal Year 1996-97 municipal budget process. Work has already begun to make this bigger and even better than the inaugural event. ` The economic impact on the City is substantial. First, we expect to double or triple the number of entries; virtually all of the increment will treat this as a destination event. Second, November 10 is the middle day of a 3 day holiday weekend; we believe that a substantial number of runners will stay for the weekend. Of course, it is extremely important that we receive the endorsement of the City if we are to be able to attract the sponsorship necessary to support an expanded event. We would appreciate having you present our request for a resolution of endorsement to the Parks and Recreation Commission and to the City Council. This resolution will become part of the marketing package sent to potential sponsors. Again this year, it is our plan to call the event the "City of Santa Clarita Marathon" and utilize the City seal in all of our documentation. This was mutually beneficial to the City and the Marathon last year, and I am confident that it will be again this year. Because of the very significant impact that the Marathon can have on economic. development, City officials may wish to consider sponsorship as well as endorsement this year. One way of achieving this might be "in kind" sponsorship through absorption of some or all of the expenses incurred through the City. For example, in 1995, the expense of City Public Works was over $12,000 and Sheriffs Department services were over $13,000. We will appreciate any consideration that the City may give to the Marathon. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me directly. Thank you for your assistance. Sincere , Jerry D.
