SUBJECT- NEWHALL RANCH ROAD BRIDGE OVER SAN FRANCISQUITO
CANYON (BRIDGE BARRIER)
DEPARTMENT: Building and Engineering Services
The Newhall Ranch Road bridge is being constructed by the Newhall Land and Farming
Company within Los Angeles County jurisdiction. As part of construction, the bridge railing
design is simple concrete barrier (Caltrans Type 26). However, Newhall Land and Farming has
agreed to revise the plans and construct an aesthetic tile barrier similar to bridges recently
constructed by the City on Magic Mountain Parkway and San Fernando Road. The aesthetic
tile is a modification of Caltrans' standard bridge barrier rail detail, and Los Angeles County
is requiring that the City maintain this bridge railing until the City annexes this area.
Constructing the barrier bridge with tile now is more cost-effective so that this bridge is
consistent with other bridges in our community.
The bridge will need to be retiled every 10-15 years at an average cost of $10,000. Additional
maintenance costs may be involved in the event that someone hits the bridge railing in an auto
accident, but it is expected that these costs would be recovered from the driver's insurance
company.
The City Council authorize the City Manager to sign the attached letter for the maintenance of
the Newhall Ranch Road bridge barrier over San Francisquito Canyon.

Dear Mr. Erpenbach:
On April 23, 1996 the City Council authorized the City to perform maintenance
functions on the decorative tile barrier of Newhall Ranch Road bridge over San
Fransisquito Creek until the City annexes this area. A copy of the City Council
Agenda Report is attached.
Please approve the attached revised bridge barrier plans of the subject project
(sheets 18, 19, and 20 of 20) for construction. If you have any questions, please
