SUBJECT: SANTA CLARITA YOUTHMAPPING PROJECT
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Community Services
One of the Action Items identified in the Youth Strategic Plan is to provide facilities, programs,
and activities for youth In keeping with this action item, staff has identified Project YouthMap,
a program created by the Center for Youth Development and Policy in Washington, D.C. The
program is designed to allow youth to canvass their community, identifying existing resources
available to. the youth of the community.
The Keystone Club (the youth service branch of the Santa Clarita Boys' & Girls' Club) has
agreed to work with the City on this project. Members of the Keystone Club will actually do the
"YouthMapping." In exchange, the City will provide to the Boys' & Girls' Club funds to be
applied to each participating youth's account, to be applied to upcoming Boys' & Girls' Club
conferences. (Estimated cost of project - $5,000.00)
Members of the Keystone Club will go into the community, block by block, and will conduct
surveys of any location they find which seems to offer jobs, programs, services, or just a caring
adult to Santa Clarita's youth. Once the City has been "mapped," the youth will help to compile
a directory of the YouthMap findings. This directory will be available to all of Santa Clarita's
youth.
The premise behind the program is that the youth themselves are best able to identify those
programs and services which are resources to them.. The program allows participants to gain
experience and a sense of accomplishment as a "YouthMap" of the City emerges, and as they
provide a valuable service to their peers.
City Council direct staff to continue with Project YouthMap as planned.
