Item to be presented by:
Dennis Welch
NEW BUSINESS
DATE: May 28, 1996
SUBJECT: SIDEWALK REPLACEMENT PRESENTATION
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
BACKGROUND
Over the past three years, City staff have reduced the sidewalk replacement waiting list from five years to
two years. This informational report will focus on how we accomplished this goal, and the slide
presentation will illustrate how the Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department interacts
with the neighborhoods in which they work.
In 1990 residents who requested their sidewalks be replaced by the City were put on a five year waiting
list. In this same year the Street Maintenance Division was created and aimed its sights on reducing the
waiting fist. In 1993 the list was reduced to three years, and in 1995, with the private contracting of larger
sidewalk replacement jobs the list, was lowered to two years.
Over the last two fiscal years the City has augmented its replacement program by letting two contracts,
totaling $140,000 and pouring over 32,686 square feet of concrete.
In 1995 the Concrete Crew of the Street Maintenance Division, consisting of one crew leader and three
crewmen, completed 200 residential requests and poured over 23,183 square feet of sidewalks and poured
over 200 linear feet of curbs and gutters. For 1996 the Concrete Crew has set a goal to pour over 30,000
squarefeet of sidewalks and to lay 200 linear feet of curbs and gutters.
Residents who call today about their sidewalks are told that their sidewalks will be inspected immediately
and if they do not meet our safety standards they are scheduled to a future date for replacement.
