HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-02-25 - AGENDA REPORTS - CMTY SERV GRANT (2)City Manager Approv Item to be presented Raquel Garcia UNFINISHED BUSINESS DATE: February 25, 1997 SUBJECT: COMMUNITY SERVICES GRANT - SECOND FUNDING CYCLE DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation and Community Services On January 27, 1997, the Community Services Grants Committee met to review and recommend applications resubmitted by agencies for Community Services Grant program funding. For this second round, the City received eight resubmittals from the first funding cycle and one new application, for a total of $42,167 in grant requests (please refer to the Agency Recommendation List Summary). The requests received far exceeded available grant funds of $18,800. Although every application submitted demonstrated great effort, the Committee gave priority to resubmittals, and funded those proposals which met the criteria of the grant. Agencies are highly encouraged to reapply for the next year's grant program. The application process begins in late spring of 1997. At the last review meeting of the Committee, the Committee received a staff assessment of the Grant program. Over the next several months, the Committee will work with staff on suggestions to enhance the program. RECOMMENDATION City Council to approve the Grant Committee recommendation of grant awards to agencies, as outlined in the Agency Recommendation List Summary in the amount of $17,327. Page 3. 4. Mad About Rising Crime Club MARC Outreach Program - Expands Club MARC program into SCV elementary schools. Program provides positive activities for students and educates them on gangs, drugs and violence. The grant funds will be used as seed money required to fund Club MARC at schools. A club's budget varies but in general includes costs for supplies, programs, copies, and $3,000 -0- Proposal is unclear as to role of PTA as collaborator on project. Healthy Kids Clubs - Addresses self-esteem and character building of girls between the ages of 8 and 14. Provides a camp experience and Caring Kids Ball. The grant funds will be used to pay the registration costs for 22 girls to attend camp, and supplies and nutrition $5,000. -0- Proposal submitted requests $3,000 for salaries which are ineligible for grant funding. RI Santa Clarita Santa Clarita International International Film Film Festival Festival - Provides 7 - day international family film festival. The principal audience served by SCIFF is the local children of Santa Clarita and their extended families of the community. The project provides community education and cultural enrichment. The grant funds will be used to pay screen rentals at Edwards 10-plex, rental costs for lights at final award dinner, printing expenses for screenplay and film submissions forms, awards, certificates for screen play competition, and print ads and radio advertising with local news. $5,000. -0- Proposal does not meet priority focus areas. Agency resubmitted application. The application narrative was revised to address concerns of Grant Committee. The project's purpose is discussed in greater detail as it relates to priority focus areas. The agency also submitted letters of collaboration and a revised budget for the project. $2,500 funding recommended for screen rental at Edwards 10-plex for one week — include student screenings. PRCObAfSERV\ae X19196 Inside Santa Clarita - Channel 20 TV - Produces a monthly, half-hour TV program to be aired on local public access. Focus of the program is SCV business, youth programs, senior issues, health care issues and discussion of key City and Santa Clarita Valley issues. The grant funds would be used to purchase two super VHS video recorders, two super VHS VCR units, and two Panasonic television monitors. Costumes for Nutcracker Ballet - Provides funds to purchase new costumes of professional quality for sixteen dancers of the Nutcracker Ballet. $5,000 -0- Committee would like agency to resubmit application to Committee with a more clearly defined proposal which better indicates how the program will address priority focus area requirements. $4,800 .
