HomeMy WebLinkAbout1997-06-24 - AGENDA REPORTS - FREE LOCAL BUS RIDES (2)AGENDA REPORT City Manager Approval Item to be presented by: Lynn Harris CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: June 24, 1997 SUBJECT: FREE LOCAL FIXED -ROUTE BUS RIDES ON JULY 4,1997 DEPARTMENT: Public Works In honor of the City's tenth birthday, six months of celebration will commence on July 4, 1997. In order to tie in with existing citywide special events, each month leading up to the actual December 15 birthday has a different theme, around which the celebration of the birthday will be based. July's theme is "Transit and Cultural Arts." To kick off the six-month celebration of the City's tenth birthday and to encourage recognition of Transit and Cultural Arts, several events are planned for the Fourth of July. The parade will be named "The 1997 Santa Clarita 4th of July Parade, Celebrating 10 Years of Cityhood." To tie in the Transit and Cultural Arts theme, each of the two areas will sponsor parade entries. For the first time since taking over operation of the transit system in 1991, Santa Clarita Transit will offer bus service that day. To help kick off the six-month celebration of the City's birthday, and to encourage people to ride the bus to potentially -congested special events, such as the parade and the entertainment program at the Saugus Speedway, the Transit Division would like to offer free local fixed -route bus rides on July 4, 1997. This action requires City Council approval, as one day's farebox revenue will be foregone. Since we have not previously run bus service on the Fourth of July holiday, it is difficult to estimate the amount of farebox revenue that will be foregone. However, farebox revenue for the Memorial Day holiday -- another holiday on which we previously did not run bus service, but began to offer a "Sunday service" schedule this year --was $450.00. City Council authorize the City's Transit Division to offer free local fixed -route bus rides on July 4, 1997. SACCAGENDAIFREERIDE.AGN APPqi"ED Agenda Itv
