SUBJECT: INTERMODAL .SURFACE TRANSPORTATION EFFICIENCY ACT
(ISTEA II) REAUTHORIZATION
DEPARTMENT: Community Development
BACKGROUND
The United States Congress in currently reviewing the reauthorization of the Intermodal
Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA II or NEXTEA). With the passage of ISTEA
in 1991, Los Angeles County received $3 billion over six years for highway and transit
programs. At its February 11, 1997 meeting, the City Council directed staff to request
Senators Boxer and Feinstein and Congressman McKeon to include several local projects in
the proposed bill to reauthorize ISTEA. The Los. Angeles County Metropolitan
Transportation Authority (MTA) has requested that each city in the region take action to
support the reauthorization of ISTEA and to support the specific regional projects proposed
by the MTA by adopting the attached Resolution No. 97-55. This Resolution No. 97-55 would
be forwarded to Senators Boxer and Feinstein and to Congressman McKeon immediately
upon adoption by the City Council.
Adopt Resolution No. 97-55 and authorize the Mayor to forward this resolution to the City's
congressional representatives.
